Probably too many to list in all honesty, but I’d say these are some of the artists who have had a profound effect on my approach to music…in no particular order…
Ry Cooder – An encyclopaedia of American roots music, and slide guitar playing that hits me straight in the heart every time!
Tom Waits – Probably my favourite songwriter of all time. Forever evolving and experimenting and never afraid to keep it raw, honest and fun.
John Martyn – Pure emotion flowing from every note, all the time!
Marc Ribot – Can play nice, can play nasty, can play everything in between! Always spot on and tasteful in sessions and wild and unpredictable in his own work.
Thelonius Monk – Incredible sense of melody and rhythm and one of the most unique and emotive instrumentalists I’ve ever heard.
John Lurie – Love everything he has done. His humour, personality and expression shine through in all of his music and art. A truly unique voice.
T-Bone Burnett – My favourite producer. All of the albums he has worked on sound exactly like what I want to hear!
Bill Frisell – I just love his playing!
